European premiere: Giurgiu-Ruse natural gas interconnector takes shape

Scheduled to be completed by December 31, 2016 the Giurgiu-Ruse natural gas interconnector is a strategic investment, designed to ensure energy security and the safe supply with natural gas for the two countries, Bulgaria and Romania.

At the end of September, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Economy, Trade and Relations with the Business Environment Costin Borc paid a working visit to the development site of the Giurgiu-Ruse natural gas interconnector, where he met the representatives of companies involved in the project: Transgaz, Inspet and Habau. On behalf of the national gas transmission operator, President Ion Sterian presented the progress of works on the Giurgiu-Ruse interconnection project.nterconector gaze Giurgiu Ruse 1

At the Danube undercrossing in Comasca (Giurgiu County) the Minister of Economy attended the commencement of installing the main pipe in the drilling carried out under the Danube, along with Hamza Karimov, SOCAR Petroleum CEO, the company with which Transgaz has concluded a Memorandum of cooperation and exchange of experience.

The official visit continued at the Gas Measuring Station (SMG) Giurgiu, the gas station that allows flow in both directions, bidirectional flow sized at a maximum level of 1.5 bcm per year in both directions.
“From SMG Giurgiu, the gas is transported by DN 500 mm pipelines in length of 5.1 km to the Comasca group taps. The effective length of the undercrossing is of 2.1 km from the Comasca group taps (Romania) to the similar group in Marten (Bulgaria). So far, this is the greatest work of this kind in Romania and in Europe - a pioneering work,” Transgaz representatives said in a press release.
In the first year, once the pipeline functions properly, on the base of the agreements signed, Transgaz will ensure a flow of 0.5 billion cubic meters at a pressure of 29 bar at the border.

The Romania-Bulgaria interconnection project is the only project that can ensure the transport of natural gas from the southern gas route Azerbaijan-Turkey-Greece to Austria, by the segment in Romania. The gas pipeline from Bulgaria to Austria via Romania and Hungary (BRUA) is of particular regional importance, therefore after the commissioning it will ensure the integration of natural gas sources from the Southern corridor to the Central and Western European markets.

The BRUA project is part of the Transgaz development plan for 2014-2023 and is reflected on the updated list of common interest projects adopted by the European Commission. The Black Sea coast-Podisor gas compression station pipeline is also a project of common interest for the European Union and would connect to BRUA taking over the potential natural gas reserves in the Black Sea.
